The Society for Medieval Arts and Sciences (SMAS) holds meetings once a week and organizes many interesting events for members, including Bardic circles, caroling, and trips to renaissance faires and the Medieval Manor in Boston. SMAS is also closely related to one of the largest LARP (live-action role playing) communities in New England, The Realms, and often hosts Realms events on campus. As a result of these events, SMAS members and other Realmsies can often be seen on campus in garb, carrying padded foam "boffer weapons".
SMAS holds "fight practice" (large line battles that can often involve fifty or more people) every week; the location changes often to avoid freaking the mundanes, but all those genuinely wishing to participate are welcome (weapons can be provided). Currently fight practice is held on the Quad every Monday at 7:30 p.m., and a weekly "newbie fight practice" is held at the same time and place on Thursday.
SMAS meetings are held Tuesday at 7 p.m. in Salisbury room 405. SMAS also holds a workshop that changes weekly at 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, after the meeting in the same location
SMAS is often incorrectly identified with the Wedge rats, perhaps due to the shock value of carrying around large foam swords; in fact, the Wedge rats are more properly identified with the SFS.
